Unions in Three Nations to File NAFTA Labor Violations Charges Against U.S.

On Tuesday more than two dozen U.S., Canadian and Mexican labor organizations will file a charge against the U.S. and North Carolina under labor provisions of NAFTA. The accusation is that 650,000 public employees in North Carolina are being denied the right to collectively bargain. Dan Kovalik, Associate General Counsel of the United Steelworkers.

Emphasizing the importance of globalization and its effect on our lives, conference speaker Robert Muehlenkamp stated that, "the world has never seen a transformation anything like what we are going through and you students will have to live with [it]."

This year's conference, entitled "Globalization and Social Responsibility: Working for the Common Good" was meant to emphasize the importance of globalization in altering the paradigms of employment and its effect on human gains across the world.

Andrew Young, a former member of Dr. King's inner circle at SCLC, who went on to serve three terms in Congress, a stint as U.N. ambassador and two terms as mayor of Atlanta before cashing out his Freedom Movement chips for a lucrative career as an international "business consultant," decisively spat upon the movement for human rights and economic justice that he spent his early career helping to build.

HADLEY - Damaris Meza Guillen held a pair of Faded Glory jeans like the ones she sews together at a Nicaraguan factory that supplies Wal-Mart. She said she would have to work a week to buy the jeans - even at Wal-Mart's prices - because she is paid only 39 cents an hour.

Last June I met with workers from a factory in the Las Mercedes Free Trade Zone in Managua that produces Faded Glory jeans for Wal-Mart. Many had just been fired for taking part in a strike demanding that the company meet its promises to its workers.
