The current criminal charges and pending legal cases against the leaders of the Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity must be dropped immediately.
On Friday, July 30, 2010, criminal charges were filed against leaders of apparel workers’ organizations, claiming that they incited worker unrest. The government arrested a number of garment industry workers. Prior to these charges, the government revoked the operating license of BCWS, seized their property and froze their bank accounts. On August 13, 2010 Kalpona Akter and fellow organizer Babul Akhter were arrested and detained for one month.
Today the criminal cases continue.
Many of the cases were filed by known associates of large factory conglomerates in Bangladesh. These cases are meant to intimidate and prevent BCWS from continuing its essential work of organizing and uplifting the voices of the millions of workers in Bangladesh.
