In 1911, 146 workers, mainly Jewish and Italian immigrant women, were killed in a fire on the 8th, 9th and 10th floors of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. The 9th floor exit was locked and the fire escapes and equipment were inadequate, leaving several workers to jumped to their deaths to escape the flames. This fire galvanized a movement to end sweatshops in the U.S.
The fight of workers for just wages, dignity, respect and safety are not concerns unique to one corner of the globe. While marking the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire we are challenged by the realities of fires raging around the world and threatening workers globally today. This fire in 1911 rings eerily similar to fires raging in Bangladeshi garment factories today. Just this past December, an electrical fire killed 35 at the "That's It Sportswear Ltd" garment factory 16 miles north of Dhaka. This fire was one of several that have killed over a hundred workers in 2010 alone. The flames are not incidental and are signs of greater workers' struggles.
ILRF looks forward to an evening of honoring leaders who work tirelessly to ensure that there is not one more fire.
