Uzbekistan still using forced labour in 2015

The government of Uzbekistan continued to use forced labour in 2015, a new report suggests, with more than 1m citizens compelled through various means to grow and pick cotton.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) was allowed by the Uzbekistan government, for the first time, to conduct a monitoring of forced and child labour during the cotton harvest this year.  In the ILO's final report and independent Uzbek monitors, the labour group says that while the use of children in the cotton harvest has become "rare and sporadic" due to a growing awareness of the unacceptability of this, there was convincing evidence of continued forced labour.
