As companies shift more production for things like clothing and bedsheets to Pakistan, it is important to learn more about the environment in which unions and NGOs operate in Pakistan. Less than 1% of workers in Pakistan are under a collective bargaining agreement.
Mr. Khalid Mahmood of the Labor Education Foundation will discuss his experience organizing factory and home based workers in Pakistan. Mr. Mahmood will also talk about the barriers to freedom of association as unions continue to be ignored by employers.
Labor Education Foundation (LEF) is an NGO working on child labor, illiteracy, peace & democracy, and trade union training (in leadership skills, management and publicity). In addition, LEF has also supported women workers through the development of cooperatives for home-based women workers where glass bangles are produced for the U.S. and Europe.
