Coalition Coordinator, Uzbekistan Cotton Campaign

The Cotton Campaign to end forced child labor in the Uzbekistan cotton industry is a broad coalition of human rights NGOs, trade unions, socially responsible investors, industry association, and retailers.  The Coalition Coordinator will be responsible for building consensus among coalition participants, working with the steering committee to develop a strategic plan and expanding the coalition. This position will require experience in convening and building consensus among diverse organizations in international human rights advocacy strategies.   The ideal candidate will also have experience in leading policy advocacy campaigns and facilitating multi-stakeholder dialogue.  Applicants must be excellent communicators, have strong writing skills, and knowledge about international human rights issues, particularly child and forced labor. An ideal candidate is one who has been involved in social/economic justice campaigning and is an independent, innovative and driven individual with excellent interpersonal skills.

Job responsibilities include:
Build Consensus and Strategic Vision
1.    Work with the Steering Group to set strategic direction for the Uzbekistan cotton initiative as a whole and serve as a point of contact for keeping all civil society and business stakeholders engaged in the campaign.
2.    Implement the overall strategic vision of the international campaign and identify key targets for this initiative.
3.    Facilitate the Steering Group’s identification of leverage points, such as the ILO, World Bank, International Cotton Advisory Committee, individual governments, and any other targets or leverage points the Steering Group may identify. 
4.    Coordinate with the editor of Cottoncampaign.org, the Coalition’s website and develop a campaign branding strategy and serve as the public face of the initiative where appropriate a campaign branding strategy and serve as the public face of the initiative where appropriate.
Coordinate Communications
5.    Ensure the effective flow of information among coalition participants and coalition working groups.
6.    Facilitate regular steering committee meetings, circulating notes, updating work plans and support ongoing communications between meetings.
7.    Participate in working group meetings. Provide support to working group chairs and maintain an efficient complementarity and division of labor among the working groups.
8.    Provide coordination between geographical coalitions, particularly those in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Facilitate and support efforts to the coalition expanding into new geographical areas.
9.    Produce specific work products such as meeting reports and media statements, as needed and work with cottoncampaign.org site manager to ensure dissemination and accessibility of campaign information, especially with traditional and social media outreach.
10.    Coordinate drafting, revising and collecting signatures for joint letters to send to various governments or international institutions on behalf of the coalition.
Fundraise and Grow the Coalition
11.    Work with the Steering Group, and particularly with the European campaign coordinator, to identify new allies and strategies for recruiting new Cotton Campaign participants and deepening the participation of all.
12.    Fundraise for the campaign secretariat and support/coordinate fundraising among the principal coalition partners.
13.    Manage and expand funder relations, writing grant applications and grant reports.

Qualifications:
-    5+ years’ experience in policy advocacy and/or social justice campaigns (especially corporate campaigns);
-    Experience working on labor and human rights issues, international focus preferred;
-    Knowledge and experience with international organizations and related mechanisms (OECD, ILO, World Bank) and global apparel supply chains
-    Experience in coalition building and the facilitation of dialogue;
-    Skilled in coordination, mediation and strategic planning;
-    Excellent communications, writing and editing skills;
-    Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, manage work streams, multi-task and work creatively;
-    Well organized and detail oriented;
-    Fluency in English (written & oral);  knowledge of Russian or Uzbek also helpful;
-    Bachelor’s degree required.

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Location: Washington, D.C. strongly preferred.

China Program Intern

ILRF seeks an intern to start in January 2012 to assist with research, translation and writing for the organization's China Program. Interns will help evaluate ILRF's ongoing rule of law work in China, as well as create new content for the website and follow the Chinese press. Interns will also be expected to write blogs about labor-related events in China and attend events related to the issues, if applicable over the course of the internship. In conjunction with the specialized area of this internship, the intern will also be asked to facilitate some administrative tasks. This internship requires conversational Mandarin Chinese language skills and the ability to read and write simplified Chinese.

Rights for Working Women Intern

The Rights for Working Women program is looking for an intern who can assist with writing and research of issues affecting female workers around the world. Candidates should have a good understanding of women's issues and rights in the international arena, and general understanding of employments issues that are gender specific. Interns will be expected to assist in the creation of program and web contents, write blogs about female employment issues, attend events related to the program, and perform general administrative tasks. In conjunction with the specialized area of this internship, the intern will also be asked to facilitate some administrative tasks. Ideally, candidates who apply will be able to dedicate 20 or more hours per week to this internship. Candidates who can speak Korean are also strongly encouraged to apply.

Campaign Internship

This internship is recommended for a person that can dedicate 20 or more hours per week to work on ILRF projects.

ILRF seeks a program intern to assist the Campaigns Coordinator. This intern will work with experienced organizers to develop strategy for ongoing campaigns and engage in hands on experience by attending meetings with ILRF staff and playing an integral role in activity planning. Projects may include but are not limited to writing reports, designing campaigns, assisting with translation, as well as assisting with speaking tour logistics and database entry. In conjunction with the specialized area of this internship, the intern will also be asked to facilitate some administrative tasks. This person would ideally be an undergraduate in the Washington, DC area. The person should be able to commit to at least 20 hours of work per week. The candidate preferably has a demonstrated commitment to human rights work and is highly motivated. An understanding of international human rights issues and/or foreign languages is desirable. Must be able to multitask, work creatively and independently with little supervision.

Human Rights in International Trade- Program Intern

ILRF seeks an intern to assist with ongoing research and campaigning in the field of human rights and international trade. The intern would be responsible for researching, analyzing and remaining current on international trade negotiations and relevant U.S. domestic policy. Past issue areas have included: the U.S. Farm Bill, agricultural subsidies, cotton, and the preparation of labor complaints under trade review mechanisms. This person would ideally have a background in issues of the international political economy and a demonstrated commitment to human rights work. An understanding of international human rights and labor issues and/or foreign languages is desirable. Must be able to multitask, work creatively and independently with little supervision.

Corporate Social Responsibility Intern

The International Labor Rights Forum (laborrights.org) seeks an activist-oriented intern to support research needs related to free2work.org. This Intern will be responsible for working with ILRF and Not for Sale Campaign staff to complete research for companies listed on free2work.org. Much of the research is geared towards learning about the policies and implementation of corporate social responsibility practices. As such, applicants are expected to hold some background knowledge in global political economy and also have a strong understanding of issues related to corporate social responsibility, child labor, and international labor standards.

A minimum of 15 hours per week is required for this intern position. This position will likely be based in San Francisco, Washington D.C., or Northampton, MA though other arrangements may be possible.

Communications Intern

The International Labor Rights Forum (laborrights.org) seeks an intern to support ILRF’s communications related activities. The ILRF has been in existence for over 20 years and continues to play a vital role in exposing labor rights abuses around the world. Whether through campaigns, research, or public policy, ILRF has a story to tell and this Communications Intern would aid in that task.

Duties include: writing press releases, news clipping, monitoring blogs, updating press lists, some administrative support, and, depending on experience, communication strategy development. Graphic design & web skills are highly desirable.

This position will likely be based in Washington, DC at ILRFs office though other arrangements may be possible.

Development/Fundraising Intern

The ILRF seeks an intern to support our ongoing work particularly concerning fundraisng and development.

Responsibilities include:

  • Primarily responsible for assisting with activities that support prospect research, donor cultivation and stewardship programs
  • Assist with mass mailings
  • Process donor thank you notes
  • Provide support to annual fundraising events as needed
  • Provide other administrative support as needed

Requirements:

  • Availability to work at least 15 flexible hours per week.
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Sound judgment, initiative and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, a positive sense of humor and a “can do” attitude.
